Your safety always comes first. About Sandwich Harbour Sandwich Harbour is a world-renowned coastal lagoon located approximately 55 km south of Walvis Bay, within the Namib-Naukluft National Park. It is one of the few places on Earth where massive desert dunes plunge directly into the Atlantic Ocean, creating an unforgettable landscape that attracts photographers, nature lovers and adventure travellers from around the world. The lagoon is internationally recognised as a RAMSAR Wetland of International Importance, supporting up to 250,000 migratory and resident birds throughout the year, including: Greater & Lesser Flamingos Great White Pelicans Cape Cormorants Pied Avocets Damara Terns Numerous wading birds and shorebirds Although known as Sandwich Harbour, it has never functioned as a modern harbour. During the 19th century it briefly served as a small trading and whaling station before gradually becoming inaccessible as sand accumulated along the coastline. Today it is celebrated as one of Namibia's most remarkable conservation areas. Your Sandwich Harbour Adventure Your adventure begins with collection from your accommodation in Walvis Bay or Swakopmund. After a short safety briefing, we head south towards the Namib-Naukluft National Park, travelling through landscapes found nowhere else in the world. Walvis Bay Lagoon Our first stop is the beautiful Walvis Bay Lagoon, one of Southern Africa's most important coastal wetlands. Depending on the season, thousands of flamingos, pelicans and other migratory birds gather here, making it a paradise for birdwatchers and photographers. Pink Salt Lake & Walvis Bay Salt Refinery Next, we visit the famous Pink Salt Lake and the Walvis Bay Salt Refinery, the largest solar salt evaporation plant in Africa, producing approximately 750,000 tonnes of salt annually. The striking pink evaporation ponds create one of the most photographed locations on Namibia's coastline. Into the Namib Desert Leaving the salt works behind, we drive onto the beach and begin our exciting 4x4 journey through the Namib Desert. Your experienced guide expertly navigates the towering dunes while sharing fascinating stories about the desert's geology, wildlife and history. Along the way you may encounter: Springbok Oryx (Gemsbok) Black-backed Jackals Brown Hyenas (occasionally) Ostriches Desert birds Seals along the coastline Where the Dunes Meet the Ocean One of the highlights of the tour is reaching the famous section where the golden dunes descend directly into the Atlantic Ocean. This dramatic landscape offers spectacular panoramic views and outstanding photography opportunities unlike anywhere else on Earth. Sandwich Harbour Lagoon If tides and weather allow, we continue to the magnificent Sandwich Harbour Lagoon itself. You'll have time to walk, explore, climb the surrounding dunes and enjoy incredible views over the lagoon and coastline. Our guides know the best viewpoints to capture unforgettable photographs. Lunch with a View Weather permitting, we serve a delicious picnic lunch overlooking the lagoon. If coastal conditions are windy or cold, we'll relocate to a sheltered spot among the dunes where you can relax and enjoy your meal surrounded by the silence of the Namib Desert. Return Journey After lunch, we make our way back towards Walvis Bay at a relaxed pace, stopping whenever wildlife or photographic opportunities present themselves.
